Adult Book Club

If you like to read, join the club! We’re talking about Where’d you go, Bernadette? by Maria Semple, the satirical story of a daughter searching for her brilliant, if eccentric, mother who disappeared – or escaped – from their Seattle home. Copies will be available in the new book area and online in the Navy Overdrive e-Library (http://www.navy.lib.overdrive.com). Contact the Library if you would like an account created.
Kindle E-Readers Available for Check-Out
Yokosuka Library has the Kindle DX available for check out. Kindles are loaded with popular titles such as “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” and classics like “Pride and Prejudice.” Navy Overdrive e-Library users can check out more e-books for the Kindle or your own mobile device or computer. Contact the library if you would like an account created. Yokosuka Library patrons, ages 18 and older, may check out Kindles for up to one month. The supply is limited so please stop by the Circulation Desk today!

NKO brings you Byki® – A FREE and powerful language-learning software and personalized language-learning system.1) Login to your NKO account and click on the Reference tab on the far right.

2) Go to the left blue banner and click on the link for “E-library Foreign Language / Culture. You will then have an option to choose from selected language sites. Transparent Language Online will take you to their site (byki.com)

3) Once you register on their site, you can click on the icon for the app for either iPhone, iPad or Android smartphones and tablets (and computers). There are also instructions for activating the account once you have downloaded the app. You can browse the iTunes store for more language-specific apps if you like.

TUTOR.COM TO GO
We are very excited to announce our cool, new mobile app Tutor.com To Go! The app gives eligible military students another way to access the Tutor.comfor Military Families program. Students can connect to a live tutor for one-to-one help from their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.Students must have an account with the Tutor.com for Military Families program to connect to a tutor, and the app is available as a free downloadin the iTunes Store.

Students can store essays, homework problems and other assignments in their mobile locker, and share items from their locker with a tutor.
Students can take pictures of assignments and textbook pages from their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, and store them in their locker.

Tumble Books
For online reading, Navy libraries has exciting websites available presented by the parent company – TumbleBooks. TumbleBooks includes animated stories and games. TumbleReadables are designed so you and your child can read along sentence by sentence. TumbleTalkingBooks are a streaming audio feed where you can bookmark your place, and includes books for children, teens and adults. Eligible users can access TumbleBooks online through Military One Source http://www.militaryonesource.mil or Navy Knowledge Online https://wwwa.nko.navy.mil.
Playaway
WHAT IS PLAYAWAY?
Playaway is the newest format of audio, combining a wide variety of content with an easy-to-use player all in one small unit. When receiving your Playaway, all you have to do is press play to start listening immediately – there is no need for a separate player, and it comes with earbuds and a battery to make it play.
Playaway is the most simple and immediate way to enjoy audiobooks. Its portability allows users to enjoy their favorite authors and titles on-the-go, whenever and wherever.

    We have over 100 books, CDs, and DVDs for learning foreign languages, including Japanese, Spanish, and Chinese. Yokosuka Library also holds a few Japanese language children’s books.

    “Transparent Language Online”, a language learning course with a mobile app called “Byki” is also available (subject to patron eligibility) online through Military One Source (www.militaryonesource.mil) or Navy Knowledge Online (https://wwwa.nko.navy.mil).

    The Navy Overdrive Online Library has additional e-books, e-audiobooks and videos for learning languages as well as books in other languages. For example, there are currently 255 fiction e-books in Japanese and 150 in Spanish.

    For books written in foreign languages; we do have a selection of donated books available for customers to take home and keep if he/she would like. For more information, please visit Yokosuka Library or call 243-5574 or 046-816-5574.
